Roasting marshmallows with crisp edges and slippery middles. Lined up side-by-side in sleeping bags next to my siblings, the best slumber party ever invented.<\/p>\n<p>We were country kids. Camping was a natural fit. We\u00a0loved the forest, the fire, the swimming, the sticks.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to now. The more I camped as an adult, the more I knew I wanted to get a camper. Wisconsin nights can be cold and damp;\u00a0the ground slopes; my back aches.<\/p>\n<h4>Ready to glamp<\/h4>\n<p>Taking my love of beautiful, comfortable, inspiring things, I decided to plan for a camper remodel. We got a great deal, but there were issues. Some mildew. Holes in the screens. Canvas that was no longer waterproof. We considered these minor and fixable.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be sure to read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.title-3.com\/BuyUsed.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this checklist <\/a>if you&#8217;re in the market for a used camper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a side note, I didn&#8217;t realize at the time how much\u00a0I would <em>love<\/em> the\u00a0bump out dinette until our last rainy camping trip when I discovered\u00a0I can fit my whole yoga mat on the floor. It&#8217;s so roomy! Love, love love! And yet it all folds up into a twelve foot box <strong>which is how\u00a0our camper\u00a0earned the name Optimus Prime,<\/strong> courtesy of my eight year old nephew who said our camper reminded him of a transformer.<\/p>\n<p>The name stuck.<\/p>\n<h4>Part 2: The Inspiration for After.<\/h4>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the photo I used to plan my color palette and atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.melissagorzelanczyk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Inspiration-photo.jpg\" rel=\"colorbox\" class=\"colorbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1100\" src=\"http:\/\/www.melissagorzelanczyk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Inspiration-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Inspiration photo\" width=\"620\" height=\"845\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.melissagorzelanczyk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Inspiration-photo.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.melissagorzelanczyk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Inspiration-photo-600x818.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.melissagorzelanczyk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Inspiration-photo-220x300.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Isn&#8217;t it\u00a0dreamy and cozy?<\/p>\n<p>Notice the wood drawers, similar to the inside of Optimis Prime. I <em>really<\/em> wanted to avoid painting the cabinets and redoing the floor. We didn&#8217;t have time\u00a0for a\u00a0renovation of that magnitude this year, so perhaps this pop up camper remodel\u00a0needs a yearly update? I&#8217;m still really happy with the result after completing\u00a0mainly cosmetic updates.<\/p>\n<h4>Part 3: Cleanup.<\/h4>\n<p>The mildew issue turned out to be a lot more work once we got started. We used bleach and dish soap according to this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunbrella.com\/en-us\/how-to-clean\/stain-chart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunbrella guide<\/a>\u00a0and thankfully now we have sparkling clean canvas and the odor is completely gone.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be sure to rinse your canvas with plain water after using the recommended cleaner and dry thoroughly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Part 4: Curtains and Cushions.<\/h4>\n<p>The 1999 curtains were completely disgusting and ugly. My saint of a mother-in-law helped me sew new curtains for the whole camper. It took us two days.<\/p>\n<p>For the windows, I purchased white blackout curtains from Target, which were really hard to sew, but make a huge difference on those bright sunny mornings. I love how the plain white curtains makes my camper look light and airy in the inside&#8211;not like the brown color palettes campers are sold in today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saving the tabs:<\/strong> We sewed onto the\u00a0original fabric to reuse the tabs. In hindsight I think hot glue might have done the trick\u00a0attaching\u00a0the tabs to the new fabric. This was easy to do! I highly recommend this method if you aren&#8217;t handy with the sewing machine.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/littlevintagetrailer.com\/2012\/04\/how-to-make-easy-vintage-trailer-dinette-cushions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read more on the staple method.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Part 5: Functional Design<\/h4>\n<p>Since we camp so frequently in the summer, I wanted to make the transition from work life to camper life as easy as possible. I found these adorable drawers at Target which we use as a suitcase before every trip. We pack our clean clothes into the drawers, transfer them into the car and then into the camper after we&#8217;re set up. It&#8217;s so easy and instantly organized! I love these systems.
